obscure mechanics is an experimental album by luke kurtis. It was originally released in 2008 as a digital download on the artist’s blog with an accompanying pdf art booklet. This remastered re-issue was released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original album. The highly experimental project is as equally influenced by minimalist composers like Philip Glass and Steve Reich as it is by noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Black Dice. New bonus tracks, all previously unreleased but composed and recorded around the same time as the rest of the album, provide new insights into the artist’s composition practice.

“The Girl Who Wasn’t and Is tells Walker’s story of coming out mid-life … and captures the intense reckoning many people face during this process. But the powerful and honest collection also explores the intersections with others in the trans community, calls for racial justice, and finds allyship in unexpected places.” —Jordan Snowden
