We think of the spoken voice as a musical instrument. Rather than simply recording poetry, reading text aloud, or placing words over music, these works use language, voice, rhythm, sound, electronics, and other musical elements as part of a larger composition. Spoken word can push against the boundaries between poetry, sound art, experimental art music, and popular music.
