Visions of the Beyond press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — 5 Apr 2015

NEW EXHIBITION BY ARTIST STEFANIE MASCIANDARO AT NYPL

A LITERARY SCI-FI COLLABORATION WITH NEW LIT SALON PRESS

bd-studios.com is proud to announce Visions of the Beyond, a new art exhibition and accompanying book by digital illustrator Stefanie Masciandaro. The project is in collaboration with Startling Sci-Fi: New Tales of the Beyond, an anthology from New Lit Salon Press edited by Casey Ellis. The Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library will host the exhibition in their Little Underground Gallery. It opens on 1 May 2015 and runs through 31 May.

The exhibition is a deep dive into the body of work Masciandaro created specifically for Startling Sci-Fi. ”Masciandaro is a digital artist whose work is rooted in a strong understanding of the old fashioned’ analog methods that came before her.” writes Jordan M. Scoggins in the Visions of the Beyond introduction. ”Some of her pieces draw inspiration from classic hand-drawn animation while others take on a more painterly quality.” These styles and influences come together in the project, along with Masciandaro’s behind-the-scenes commentary, to form a cohesive body of work.

Later in May NLSP will host a panel discussion titled Startling Sci-Fi: Literature, Genre Fiction, and Beyond featuring Masciandaro and authors from the Startling Sci-Fi collection. The discussion will take place on 16 May at 3 PM in the Jefferson Market Library’s Willa Cather Room.

Also on view throughout the month in the library lobby will be a display of classic sci-fi books curated by Casey Ellis. bd has designed an installation featuring Ellis’s commentary alongside the books themselves. ”We hope this project will not only draw people into the broader Startling Sci-Fi and Visions of the Beyond projects,” says Scoggins, ”but also promote science fiction as a genre all literary readers should be interested in.” The installation includes such classics as George Orwell’s novel 1984 and Jacques Lob’s graphic novel Snowpiercer, which is accompanied by an original illustration from Masciandaro.

Visions of the Beyond by Stefanie Masciandaro will be on view from 1 to 31 May. The Startling Sci-Fi panel discussion will be on 16 May at 3 PM. Both books, Visions of the Beyond and Startling Sci-Fi: New Tales of the Beyond, will be available to order from Amazon and all other major booksellers. Stefanie Masciandaro is a New York-based artist with a love of all things fuzzy and sugary, not at the same time though. Often she can be found wandering the streets of Manhattan in a slightly dazed state, and will frequently ask questions like ”What day is it?” or ”Is three cups of coffee in one sitting too many?” or ”Yes, but is it feminist?”
