NEW BOOK PROVIDES A PEEK INTO THE ARTIST’S SKETCHBOOKS
bd-studios.com is excited to announce the publication of a new book by Michael Tice, The Male Nude: Line Drawings 2008—2018. The book will be available to purchase in paperback and eBook editions later this month.
Culled from the artist’s informal sketchbooks from the past ten years, The Male Nude is a collection of over 180 nude and erotic line drawings depicting the male form and queer sexuality. When compared to the bold colors of the artist’s first book, Retrospective, the black and white drawings in The Male Nude evoke a feeling of browsing through the artist’s private journals. Tice explores desire, pleasure, and lust through pencil and paper. His lines alternate between precise and controlled and free and loose, resulting in a body of work both sensual and sensitive.
Working with numerous models and friends over the years, Tice never intended these drawings for publication. The sketchbooks he kept were a way to practice, study, and otherwise explore ideas for his more formal paintings and watercolors. This allowed Tice to explore more explicit forms of sexuality and eroticism.
”Tice told me about his male nude drawings, and I agreed to model for him,” remembers luke kurtis. ”When I saw him drawing in person, I was impressed by how quickly he worked. He expressed the contours of the male form in just a few strokes.” kurtis asked Tice to show him other drawings he had done and was surprised by the sheer volume of drawings he had created over the past ten years. ”The designer in me immediately knew this collection needed to be published. I had an instant vision for what the book would look like.”
It took some convincing, but Tice eventually agreed. ”I never intended to publish or even show these works. They were private, almost like a diary,” says the artist. ”But now that I see them in this way, they have a new life, and I couldn’t be more excited about that.”
The Male Nude will be available to order in paperback from all major book retailers. An eBook version will be available on Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play.
Michael Tice has had numerous solo exhibitions in New York City and beyond. Most recently he shared a two man show with Guy Danella at Andrejev Galleries in Louisburg, Northa Carolina. The show, Daydream Narratives, explored the surrealist side of Tice’s work. He has a BFA from the University of South Carolina, a two-month fellowship to the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH, and has done graduate work at the University of North Carolina and New York University. He lives and works in North Carolina.
